Tob Cohen Trial: Prosecution Builds Case of Betrayal and Murder

The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has laid out a compelling case against Sarah Wairimu Cohen in the ongoing trial for the murder of her husband, businessman Tob Cohen.

During the opening statement, Senior Assistant DPP Gikui Gichuhi detailed the brutal circumstances of Cohen’s death, asserting that the prosecution would prove that Wairimu was responsible.

“The evidence you will hear throughout this trial will establish, beyond a reasonable doubt, that the accused, Sarah Wairimu Cohen, is the one who killed her husband, Tob Cohen,” the prosecution stated.

Cohen was reported missing for 54 days before his body was discovered on September 13, 2019, inside an underground water tank at his Kitisuru residence.

Prosecutors described his marriage to Wairimu as toxic, with ongoing conflicts that escalated to his murder on July 19, 2019.

The case is built on forensic evidence, witness testimonies, and expert reports, including DNA analysis, autopsy findings, and cybercrime data.

The prosecution alleges Wairimu meticulously planned and executed the murder in a calculated manner.

Wairimu, who was re-arrested in January 2025, had her bail application denied last month. The first witness testified at the crime scene today before Justice Diana Kavedza, with another set to take the stand tomorrow.

The prosecution team includes Vincent Monda, Wangui Gichuhi, Ebby Maswai, Sarah Ogweno, Peris Maina, Christine Timoi, and Lindah Mwamburi.
