KeNHA Discusses Beautification Plan for Mombasa Road

The Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has initiated a landscaping and beautification project along the A8 road reserve, stretching from James Gichuru Road Junction to the Athi River Interchange.

The move aims to enhance the aesthetic appeal of the busy corridor, promote responsible use of public spaces, and reinforce environmental sustainability along one of Nairobi’s key transport arteries.

The consultative meeting was presided over by KeNHA Director General Eng. Kungu Ndungu, alongside Maintenance Director Eng. Daniel Cherono and Corridor A Director Eng. Denis Odeck.

The forum provided a platform for key stakeholders, including urban planners, residents, and road users, to share concerns and contribute ideas on improving the corridor’s environment.

However, the initiative comes amid growing criticism over the state of Lower Mombasa Road, particularly the section beneath the Nairobi Expressway.

Road users and local leaders have expressed frustration over poor drainage, potholes, dust, and pedestrian safety hazards along this stretch.

Stakeholders at the meeting questioned why priority is being given to beautification when critical repairs and upgrades are needed below the elevated expressway.

KeNHA officials acknowledged the concerns, stating that a comprehensive improvement plan for Lower Mombasa Road is under review.

Despite the controversy, KeNHA maintains that the beautification of the A8 corridor is part of a broader strategy to transform road environments into clean, safe, and user-friendly public spaces.
