Land grabbing has become the primary security threat in Machakos County, according to Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen.
Murkomen disclosed that senior government officials, politicians, police officers, land officers, and criminal gangs are heavily involved in illegal land transactions, turning Machakos into a major refuge for criminals. He explained that many offenders fleeing from Nairobi find sanctuary in different parts of the county to avoid arrest.
The Cabinet Secretary also revealed that a large number of squatters in Machakos are not legitimate settlers, but criminals who have unlawfully taken over land — much like those evicted from the Portland area during last year’s demolitions.
Murkomen assured that the government is moving quickly to remove illegal squatters, promising that the few genuine settlers affected would receive compensation.
He also issued a stern warning against individuals vandalizing government properties and stealing metal components, noting that operations are already underway to track down and arrest those responsible.
