Gas Tanker and Mini-Truck Accidents Cause Heavy Traffic on Nairobi-Mombasa Highway

A major traffic snarl-up is unfolding along the Nairobi-Mombasa highway after a gas tanker and a mini-truck overturned near Signature Mall in Sabaki, Athi River.

The gas tanker, transporting liquid gas from Mombasa to Nairobi, reportedly lost control and plunged into a ditch early Wednesday morning.

Just 100 metres from the crash site, a mini-truck also overturned in a separate but closely timed accident.

Eyewitnesses suggest the mini-truck may have crashed first, possibly triggering the second incident involving the gas tanker.

Traffic police from Athi River police station are currently on site directing vehicles and working to clear the wreckage.

Although the exact condition of the drivers remains unclear, no fatalities have been reported.

The incident comes just a day after an oil tanker accident along the Southern Bypass in Kibera, where a front tyre burst caused the vehicle to skid off the road.

Video footage showed extensive cab damage and a stream of leaking black oil.

In response to recent crashes, the Energy and Petroleum Regulatory Authority (EPRA) is urging oil transporters to strictly follow safety guidelines, conduct regular vehicle checks, and ensure proper handling of petroleum products.
