Former Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr. Fred Matiang’i is set to make a major political comeback with a public appearance in the Gusii region this Friday, May 2, 2025, marking the start of his presidential campaign activities ahead of the 2027 elections.

According to a statement released by the Team Matiang’i Secretariat and shared by Kisii Senator Richard Onyonka, the former CS will begin his tour accompanied by top elected leaders from the Gusii region. These include Kisii Governor Simba Arati, Nyamira Governor Amos Nyaribo, Senator Onyonka, and Nyamira Senator Okong’o Omogeni.

The statement confirmed that several Members of Parliament and Members of County Assemblies from Kisii and Nyamira counties will also join the high-profile tour.

The itinerary includes strategic stopovers in Kijauri, Keroka, Keumbu, Kisii Town, and Nyamira, as well as courtesy visits to the offices of both county governors.

“The visit will include a meet-the-people tour and official courtesy visits to the Governors of Kisii and Nyamira Counties,” the Secretariat noted, adding that the engagements are part of Matiang’i’s efforts to reconnect with the grassroots and listen directly to the public’s concerns.

This development comes just days after Dr. Matiang’i held a closed-door strategy meeting with a coalition of opposition leaders on April 29, 2025, to discuss a united front for the 2027 general election.

The meeting brought together key political figures including former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, Wiper Party Leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Narc-Kenya’s Martha Karua, DAP-K Leader Eugene Wamalwa, and former Public Service CS Justin Muturi. Also present were Jubilee Party Chairman Saitoti Torome, former Agriculture CS Mithika Linturi, and veteran politician Mukhisa Kituyi.

The broad-based discussions signal renewed efforts among opposition leaders to form a powerful alliance in the run-up to 2027 — with Matiang’i now emerging as one of the key players to watch.
