Tensions in the Middle East escalated sharply as Israeli warplanes bombed Yemen’s Sanaa International Airport and surrounding areas, just hours after U.S. President Donald Trump announced an end to American strikes on the Houthi group.
The move comes after the Houthis reportedly agreed to stop maritime attacks, although no official statement has been issued by the Yemeni group.
The renewed Israeli aggression in Yemen coincides with intensified threats against Palestinians in Gaza, where Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that the population “will be moved” ahead of a broader ground offensive.
Residents in Gaza, speaking to Al Jazeera, say they will defy evacuation orders, refusing to leave their homes amid the escalating bombardment.
Senior Hamas official Basem Naim rejected any prospects for ceasefire negotiations, insisting that talks are meaningless while Israel continues its blockade and relentless airstrikes on Gaza.
The human toll in Gaza continues to soar. The Health Ministry reports at least 52,615 deaths and over 118,000 injuries since Israel’s assault began.
The Government Media Office has revised the death toll to more than 61,700, citing thousands believed to be buried under rubble.
The conflict was triggered by the October 7 Hamas-led attack on Israel that killed 1,139 people and resulted in the capture of over 200 hostages.
