The Archdiocese of Nairobi has officially addressed speculation surrounding the absence of His Eminence John Cardinal Njue, Archbishop Emeritus of Nairobi, from the upcoming Papal conclave set to begin on May 7, 2025.
In a statement released by Archbishop Philip A. Anyolo, the Archdiocese confirmed that Cardinal Njue had indeed received an official invitation to participate in the conclave through the Apostolic Nunciature in Kenya. However, due to his current health condition, the decision was made—after consultation between the Apostolic Nuncio and the Office of the Archbishop—to communicate his inability to attend to the Holy See.
This clarification follows a newspaper article alleging that Cardinal Njue was excluded from the conclave and was in good health, sparking confusion and concern among members of the Catholic community.
Archbishop Anyolo firmly dismissed the claims, stating, “Although His Eminence is eligible and was invited, his health does not permit him to travel to Rome and take part in the conclave.”
He also urged the faithful to offer prayers for the success of the conclave and for the good health of Cardinal Njue. “As the College of Cardinals prepares to enter into conclave tomorrow, I earnestly urge all the faithful to pray that the Holy Spirit may guide the Cardinals as they undertake the solemn duty of electing our next Holy Father.”
The conclave will bring together eligible cardinals from across the world to elect a new Pope following the recent vacancy of the Holy See.
