Ayra Starr, Tems, Burna Boy and Tyla Among Africans Nominated for The BET Awards

Nigerian music sensation Ayra Starr has emerged as the most nominated African artist at the BET Awards, securing three nominations. The “Rush” hitmaker earned nods in the categories of Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best New Artist, and Best International Act.

Grammy-winning artist Tems followed closely with two nominations in the BET Her category for her empowering tracks “Hold On” and “Burning.” She joins a star-studded lineup including Beyoncé, Mary J. Blige, Ariana Grande, and Summer Walker.

Other African stars recognized in the Best International Act category include Burna Boy, Rema, Black Sherif, Tyla, Abigail Chams—who is the only East African nominee—Uncle Waffles, Dlala Thukzin, Maglera Doe Boy, Shallipopi, and TxC.

The BET Award for Best International Act: Africa, introduced in 2010, was previously a standalone category celebrating African talent. However, under criticism from artists like Yemi Alade for being relegated to pre-recorded segments, it was later merged into a broader international category. This year’s nominations reflect the growing influence and global reach of African music.
