Safaricom PLC (NSE: SCOM) has recorded a historic milestone, posting a total revenue of KES 388.7 billion (USD 3 billion) for the financial year ending 31 March 2025, the highest ever in the region. This 11.2% year-on-year growth reflects the success of its five-year strategy to transition from a telecoms provider to a purpose-led technology company.
Net income rose by 10.8% to KES 69.8 billion, while operating free cash flow jumped 15.8% to KES 148.9 billion. Consequently, shareholders will receive a total dividend payout of KES 48.08 billion, including a final dividend of 65 cents per ordinary share.
The performance was underpinned by sustained innovation, strategic expansion into Ethiopia, and significant community investments totalling KES 18 billion over five years, impacting more than 13 million people in areas such as education, health, environment, and economic empowerment.
“This strong set of results reflects the dedication of our teams, the loyalty of our customers, and the strength of our strategy,” said CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa. “We are entering a new growth phase with a clear vision to become Africa’s leading purpose-led tech company by 2030.”
Earnings before interest and taxes rose 29.5% to KES 104.1 billion. Ethiopia, where Safaricom has more than doubled its subscriber base to 8.8 million, contributed nearly 10% of group revenue. M-PESA in Ethiopia now has 2.4 million active users who transacted over KES 20.6 billion in the year. Management expects the Ethiopian unit to turn profitable by FY2027.
In Kenya, service revenue grew by 10.5% to KES 364.3 billion. M-PESA led the charge with a 15.2% increase to KES 161.1 billion, now making up 44.2% of local service revenue. The platform continues to diversify into areas such as wealth management and credit.
The connectivity segment also saw gains, with mobile data revenue rising 15.2% to KES 72.9 billion, and voice revenue slightly increasing by 1.6% to KES 80.8 billion, defying global trends.
As the company closes its five-year transformation strategy, it now sets its sights on deeper digital innovation, regional expansion, and enhancing technology’s role in social impact across East Africa.
