Twelve days after the shocking murder of Kasipul MP Charles Ong’ondo Were, detectives have arrested the prime suspect believed to have pulled the trigger, in a dramatic operation just as he was about to flee the country.
The suspect, whose name is yet to be released, reportedly fled to Mihang’o in Embakasi immediately after the fatal shooting on April 30. It was in this area that police recovered a Sarsilmaz pistol, positively identified as the murder weapon. From Mihang’o, the suspect took a boda boda to Narok before boarding a public service vehicle to Isibania, a border town in Migori County, where he hoped to escape to Tanzania with the help of a relative.
Detectives were able to track him using intercepted communication between him and other suspects already in custody. The information led officers directly to his hideout, where he was arrested alongside an accomplice believed to be aiding his escape.
This arrest brings the total number of suspects in custody to 11. The alleged shooter is expected to be arraigned at the JKIA Law Courts on Monday, May 12, where he will face formal murder charges.
In a related development, businessman Philip Nahashon Aroko surrendered to police at Gigiri after being summoned by the DCI.
The late MP Was laid to rest on Friday, May 9, in a sombre ceremony at his home in Oyugis, with his family demanding justice and swift action from authorities to bring all perpetrators to book.
