Health Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale on Wednesday flagged off 2,000 Cold Chain Equipment (CCE) units at Afya House, Nairobi, in a significant step toward strengthening Kenya’s immunisation infrastructure.
Donated by UNICEF, the equipment will be distributed to all 47 counties, aiming to ensure vaccines remain potent and reach remote areas safely. The move aligns with the government’s efforts to advance Universal Health Coverage (UHC), with a particular focus on enhancing Primary Health Care.
Speaking at the event themed “Strengthening Immunization Infrastructure for a Healthier Nation,” Duale highlighted the initiative as part of a broader strategy to promote equitable access to vaccines across the country.
In addition, the Cabinet Secretary unveiled Kenya’s Integrated Immunization Data Repository and Dashboard Portal (KeNIVP), a real-time digital platform designed to enhance planning and decision-making in vaccine deployment.
Duale also reaffirmed his commitment to devolution, emphasizing that health is a devolved function and that payrolls and budgets for UHC staff should be managed by county governments. “I will not violate the Constitution,” he said, underlining the importance of respecting the law and supporting local governance.
The event underscored the government’s dedication to improving last-mile vaccine delivery, ensuring all children, including those in hard-to-reach areas, are protected from preventable diseases.
Duale was joined by UNICEF Representative Mahboob A. Bajwa, WHO Representative Dr. Abdourahmane Diallo, Principal Secretaries Dr. Ouma Oluga (Medical Services) and Ms. Mary Muthoni (Public Health), Director General for Health Dr. Patrick Amoth, and other senior ministry officials.
