Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has defended President William Ruto’s comments on abductions, which drew criticism on Monday.
In his remarks, the President stated that his administration would ensure that no more abductions take place.
“Many people misunderstood the president. His remarks were twisted. The President was simply stating the government position that it will ensure no abductions happen.
The CS said: “Do you have to be doing something to put an end to it as a Government? The Government has a responsibility to end crime and that is what we are doing.”
He went on: “Stopping it doesn’t mean we were the ones doing it. When I say, for instance, that we have stopped drug trafficking, does it mean we were involved? No.”
“The President confirmed what I have been saying all along. That the Government is not in the business of abductions,” he said.
While receiving President Alexander Stubb of Finland at State House, Ruto noted that all those who were abducted during the Gen Z protest were returned, a move that saw Kenyans raise concerns over the statement.
This also saw leaders within the opposition call on Ruto to name those who were behind the abductions.
“He just confirmed what I’ve been saying all along! What was so difficult about simply acknowledging that these were state-sponsored killings and abductions, and putting a stop to them sooner?” former Public Service CS Justin Muturi stated.
