NAIROBI, Kenya — Inspector General of the National Police Service, Mr. Douglas Kanja, today hosted a high-level delegation from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, Regional Office for Eastern Africa (UNODC ROEA), led by Ms. Ashita Mittal, at Jogoo House in Nairobi.
The strategic engagement focused on strengthening collaboration between the National Police Service (NPS) and the UNODC, with special emphasis on police digitisation and the modernisation of the National Police College Main Campus in Kiganjo, under the flagship “Kiganjo Project.”
The project seeks to revamp the college’s physical infrastructure and boost its technical and training capacity, aligning with Kenya’s broader law enforcement reform agenda.
IG Kanja acknowledged the UNODC’s pivotal role in building institutional police capacity, commending the organisation for its continued support. He spotlighted the Digital Occurrence Book (Digital OB) and instant traffic fines system as key innovations aimed at promoting transparency, accountability, and service delivery within the service.
“Improved digital systems will also help reduce public complaints by streamlining service delivery and enabling real-time updates in case management,” said IG Kanja. “This will ensure fairness and efficiency in the criminal justice process.”
The IG also reaffirmed the NPS’s commitment to transforming police stations and training institutions into centres of excellence, capable of confronting modern threats, including terrorism, drug trafficking, and corruption.
The discussions reaffirmed the shared mandate of NPS and UNODC in enhancing crime prevention and law enforcement standards, especially in a rapidly evolving global security landscape. Both parties stressed the importance of leveraging innovation, training, and joint strategic planning to ensure effective policing.
