Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has strongly criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua over his recent remarks alluding to possible post-election violence in 2027.
Speaking during an interdenominational church service in Busia, Kindiki warned that such statements threaten Kenya’s peace and democratic gains.
“Kenya will never return to political barbarity. Not in 2027, not at any other time in the future,” Kindiki declared, referencing the traumatic 2007/08 post-election violence.
“Our country learnt hard and painful lessons. Never again.”
Gachagua, in a televised interview on Friday, suggested that mishandling of the 2027 elections by the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) could plunge the country into chaos.
“If that IEBC tries to mess with the elections, there will be no country here. I want to tell you that 2007 will look like a Christmas party,” he warned.
His remarks, widely perceived as inciting, have drawn backlash from across the political divide. Kapseret MP Oscar Sudi labelled them “careless” and “reckless,” joining a growing number of leaders condemning Gachagua’s sentiments.
Kindiki assured Kenyans that the government remains committed to peace and will not tolerate any form of political violence.
“We are determined to uphold the rule of law and democratic order,” he affirmed.
With less than three years to the 2027 general election, political tensions appear to be rising, prompting calls for restraint and responsible leadership.
