The Confederation of African Football (CAF) inspection team, led by third Vice President Pierre Alain Mounguengui, is set to assess Kenyan stadiums and training facilities on Friday as the country prepares to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN).
The Gabonese football official landed in Nairobi on Thursday, accompanied by a delegation of CAF experts. Their visit marks a critical step in evaluating Kenya’s readiness to host the continental tournament, which exclusively features players active in their domestic leagues.
The team arrives from Kampala, Uganda, one of the co-hosts of the championship alongside Kenya and Tanzania, where they carried out similar inspections earlier this week.
Originally scheduled for February, the tournament was postponed to August 2 to allow the host nations more time to upgrade their sporting infrastructure. However, with just over two months to go, major facilities such as the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, and Nyayo National Stadium remain under renovation. Training grounds earmarked for the tournament are also receiving last-minute upgrades.
Kenya, placed in Group A, will face stiff competition from two-time champions Morocco, DR Congo, Angola, and Zambia. The upcoming inspection will determine whether the country can meet CAF’s requirements and successfully stage the prestigious event.
CHAN 2024 will be a litmus test for Kenya’s capacity to host major international tournaments and a key moment in its football development journey.
