Congolese Layman Floribert Bwana Chui to Be Beatified in Rome

The beatification of Floribert Bwana Chui Bin Kositi, a young Congolese layman hailed as a martyr for honesty, will take place on Sunday, 15 June 2025, in Rome, during the Solemnity of the Holy Trinity.

The Dicastery for the Causes of Saints confirmed the date, following Pope Francis’ recognition of his martyrdom on 25 November 2024.

Born on 13 June 1981 in Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo, Floribert was a devout Catholic and active member of the Community of Sant’Egidio.

A trained economist and lawyer, he worked for the Congolese Control Office (OCC) where he bravely refused to authorize the entry of contaminated food into the country—choosing conscience over corruption.

His commitment to the Gospel and human dignity cost him his life. On the night of 7–8 July 2007, at just 26 years old, Floribert was kidnapped and murdered in Goma for refusing bribes linked to illegal imports.

“Do I live for Christ or not?” he once said. “It’s better to die than accept this money.”

Bishop Willy Ngumbi of Goma, in his Easter Pastoral Statement, called Floribert “a model of moral integrity” and announced a thanksgiving Mass will be held in Goma on 8 July 2025—the anniversary of his martyrdom.

Floribert Bwana Chui becomes the fourth Congolese to be beatified, joining Blessed Anuarite Nengapeta, Isidore Bakanja, and Fr. Albert Joubert.

His life stands as a powerful reminder of faith-driven courage in the face of corruption—a true witness to justice, peace, and unwavering Christian conviction.
