Football Kenya Federation (FKF) President Hussein Mohammed has confirmed that the federation is still assessing the feasibility of hosting the 2025 CECAFA Senior Challenge Cup, amid intense preparations for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) and the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
During a CAF inspection briefing at Talanta Plaza, Mohammed acknowledged the logistical difficulties posed by ongoing renovations at key venues, including Kasarani and Nyayo Stadium.
“We are considering two main options, either to host the CECAFA Cup towards the end of June when some venues may be temporarily available or to move the tournament outside the region entirely,” he said.
Discussions are currently underway with regional stakeholders to ensure the tournament’s success without disrupting CHAN and AFCON preparations.
The possibility of co-hosting or rescheduling was first discussed during the CECAFA Congress in Juba, South Sudan, last month, according to CHAN and AFCON National Steering Committee Chair Nicholas Musonye. CECAFA Executive Director Auka Gecheo later confirmed the proposal, which was supported by the Ministry of Sports and the Committee on Regional Integration.
If approved, the 2025 edition, slated for June 1-21, would be the first time in the tournament’s 98-year history that it could be co-hosted or held outside East and Central Africa.
