Victor Wanyama’s much-anticipated return to the Harambee Stars has been put on hold after the veteran midfielder withdrew from the provisional squad due to personal commitments in the UK, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) announced on Wednesday.
Wanyama, currently playing for Scottish side Dunfermline Athletic, had been recalled to the national team for the first time since announcing his international retirement in 2021. His return was expected to boost Kenya’s midfield in upcoming friendly matches against Chad, set for June 7 and 10 in Morocco.
However, Head Coach Benni McCarthy confirmed that Wanyama requested to be excused from national duty, a decision that was respected by the technical bench.
“It’s unfortunate not to have Victor back this time, but we respect his personal commitments,” said McCarthy. “He remains an important figure in Kenyan football.”
In response to Wanyama’s absence, McCarthy has called up Gor Mahia’s in-form midfielder Austine Odhiambo. The playmaker has been instrumental for K’Ogalo since returning from injury, showcasing sharp passing, creativity, and leadership in the FKF Premier League.
The upcoming friendlies are part of Kenya’s broader preparations for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) scheduled for August. The national squad is expected to report to camp on June 2.
