KIBERA, NAIROBI — May 30, 2025
In a decisive move to combat the scourge of illicit alcohol, the National Police Service (NPS) intensified its crackdown efforts with a targeted operation in Nairobi’s Kibera area yesterday.
During the raid, officers seized approximately 2,000 litres of kangara—a key raw ingredient used in the distillation of illicit liquor—and 350 litres of chang’aa, a potent, illegal brew often linked to serious health hazards.
In a statement, the NPS reiterated its commitment to safeguarding communities from the devastating effects of illicit alcohol and urged the public to play an active role in the fight.
“We encourage all citizens to support law enforcement by reporting suspicious activities related to illegal alcohol production and distribution,” the statement read.
The operation marks a significant step in a broader national campaign aimed at dismantling networks involved in the production, distribution, and sale of unregulated alcoholic beverages.
Authorities say such brews not only endanger public health but also contribute to rising crime, family breakdowns, and other social ills.
