The High Court has ordered a mental assessment for two key suspects linked to the murder of Kasipul Member of Parliament, Charles Were. The suspects, Isaack Kuria and Allan Omondi Ogolla, are expected to be formally charged with murder following the conclusion of investigations by the State.
Appearing virtually before Justice Margaret Muigai on Wednesday, the court directed that both suspects be provided with legal representation and remanded at Kamiti Maximum Security Prison. Justice Muigai emphasized the need for a psychiatric evaluation before the case proceeds further, a standard requirement in capital offenses.
The court also heard that the suspects, who are being held separately, may be involved in ongoing plea bargaining negotiations as authorities continue to pursue other prosecutorial avenues. The case is scheduled for mention on June 18 for further directions.
MP Charles Were was fatally shot on April 30 in a brazen attack during evening traffic at the City Mortuary roundabout along Ngong Road. The assailant, believed to be Kuria, reportedly alighted from a motorcycle at a red light and fired multiple shots at close range before escaping on the motorbike with an accomplice.
Among those implicated in the plot is Allan Omondi, Were’s bodyguard, who is accused of conspiring in the murder along with the MP’s driver, Walter Owino. Authorities have also identified businessman and politician Phillip Aroko, and Lake Basin Development Authority Director Ebel Ochieng, as alleged financiers of the operation.
The case continues to unfold as investigators piece together what appears to be a coordinated and well-funded assassination.
