Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale has issued a strong call for national unity, urging Kenyans to reject leaders who promote tribalism, hatred, and violence. Speaking after joining fellow Muslims for Eid al-Adha prayers at Masjid Al-Abrar Mosque in Garissa, Duale emphasized the need to uphold the spirit of togetherness and patriotism across all communities.
“As Muslims, this is a day we hold in high regard. It is a day of unity,” said Duale. “I want to use this opportunity to echo President Ruto’s call for a united Kenya, where we see each other as Kenyans first, not through the lenses of tribe, religion, or region.”
Duale condemned what he termed as “retrogressive” political leaders, accusing them of dividing the country along ethnic lines for personal gain. In a pointed remark, he criticized former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s newly launched political party, suggesting it is built on tribal foundations. “They are busy forming tribal political parties day and night. And we know them. That is not the Kenya we want,” he said.
He stressed that true leadership involves service to all citizens, regardless of their ethnic or religious background, and warned that promoting tribalism only undermines national development and social cohesion.
In addition to political commentary, Duale turned his attention to health matters, particularly the low registration numbers for the government’s Social Health Authority (SHA) initiative in Garissa County. He expressed concern that only around 45,000 residents had enrolled, far below the national registration figure of 23 million.
Duale announced plans to lead a county-wide registration campaign alongside health ministry and county officials. “This scheme has many benefits and will surely come in handy at your hour of need,” he said, adding that 71,000 Kenyans had registered for the program on Thursday alone.
The CS urged residents of pastoralist regions, where registration remains low, to take advantage of the simple and accessible process, highlighting the importance of inclusive participation in national health initiatives.
