A tragic incident marred Sunday night’s UEFA Nations League final between Spain and Portugal after a soccer fan died from a fatal fall inside the Munich stadium.
According to a UEFA official who spoke under the condition of anonymity, the fan fell from an upper level and landed in a media section below. The incident occurred during the first period of extra time, at a time when emotions were running high among players and supporters alike.
Medical personnel responded swiftly, and the area was quickly cordoned off by stewards and police. Despite emergency efforts, the individual succumbed to their injuries on site.
UEFA has yet to release an official statement.
Portugal went on to secure a dramatic victory over Spain in a penalty shootout. However, the celebration was subdued in light of the tragic events.
Speaking at the start of his post-match press conference, Spain’s head coach Luis de la Fuente offered heartfelt condolences.
“Before we begin with the questions, I would like to express my condolences because a fan died in the stands today,” he said. “My condolences to the family.”
