Safaricom Distances Itself from Controversial Arrest of Albert Omondi

Safaricom PLC has issued a strong rebuttal to claims linking the company to the arrest of the late Albert Omondi Ojwang, following public remarks made by National Assembly Speaker Hon. Justin Muturi.

In a statement signed by CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa, the telecoms giant expressed its condolences to Albert’s family and friends, while categorically denying any involvement in his arrest.

“At no point was there any contact between Safaricom and any security agency in investigating or arresting the late Albert,” the statement read.

Safaricom further clarified that it only learned of the arrest through media reports, and not through any internal or official channels.

“We are therefore concerned and disturbed by the remarks by Hon. Justin Muturi linking us to the unfortunate incident,” said Dr. Ndegwa, urging the public to disregard any statements seeking to politicize or misrepresent the matter.

The company emphasized its commitment to data security and called on all leaders to support transparent, timely, and credible investigations that would bring justice to the family of the deceased. “We wish to reassure all Kenyans that we have always been safe and secure in how we handle their data,” Dr. Ndegwa affirmed.

The death of Albert Omondi sparked nationwide concern, with Senate suspending its activities to grill Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, DCI Director General Mohammed Amin and Police Inspector General Kanja over what happened at Central Police Station.
