RONGO, MIGORI COUNTY – June 13, 2025 — A boda boda rider has been sentenced to 15 years in prison after being found guilty of raping and assaulting a 50-year-old woman in Matofali village, Rongo Sub-County.
Fredrick Ojwang was convicted by the Rongo Law Court, with Principal Magistrate Hon. Susan Mutava handing down a sentence of 10 years for rape and an additional five years for assault causing actual bodily harm.
The offences occurred on the night of March 28, 2024, around 10:00 p.m., after the victim had traveled to Rongo town to visit a local chief.
According to court proceedings, the victim was stranded in town when Fredrick offered to help her get home.
Instead, he led her to an isolated area where he raped and physically assaulted her.
“The prosecution’s case has been proven beyond reasonable doubt, and as such, the accused person is convicted for the offence of rape,” Magistrate Mutava stated in her ruling.
“I equally convict the accused person of the offence of assault causing actual bodily harm.”
The court emphasized the clarity and consistency of the victim’s testimony, noting that her account was “coherent and candid.”
Medical evidence presented in court confirmed signs of penetration, supporting the victim’s claims.
A witness who was passing through the area around 11:00 p.m. on the same night testified that he saw a boda boda parked near a bush and heard a woman screaming for help.
He switched off his motorcycle and observed two people on the ground, further corroborating the victim’s version of events.
The case was prosecuted by Juliet Ombogo, who presented four witnesses in support of the charges.
