Bayern Munich kicked off their Club World Cup campaign in brutal fashion, dismantling New Zealand’s Auckland City 10-0 in a Group C mismatch that rewrote tournament history.

The German champions showed no mercy against the semi-professional outfit, whose squad includes part-time teachers and estate agents, as they recorded the largest-ever victory in Club World Cup history.

Vincent Kompany’s side were 4-0 up within just 22 minutes thanks to a Kingsley Coman brace and goals from Michael Olise and Sacha Boey. The floodgates stayed wide open as Olise netted a second and Thomas Müller added his name to the scoresheet before halftime.

Though Harry Kane was subbed off without scoring, his replacement Jamal Musiala delivered a statement performance with a blistering 21-minute hat-trick. Müller then returned to cap the evening by scoring Bayern’s 10th.

The dominant display obliterated the previous record win — Al Hilal’s 6-1 demolition of Al Jazira in 2022 — and underlined Bayern’s status as firm favourites for the title.

“We respected our opponents but played our game,” said manager Vincent Kompany. “These tournaments are about setting the tone early.”

Auckland City, champions of Oceania, now face an uphill task as they prepare to meet Benfica in their next group match. Bayern will take on Argentina’s Boca Juniors on Friday in what promises to be a far more competitive fixture.

Despite the drubbing, Auckland’s players received a standing ovation at full-time from neutral fans, many applauding their spirit against world-class opposition.

The result sends a clear warning to the rest of the tournament’s elite: Bayern mean business.
