Government Spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura has dismissed claims that Kenya is involved in fueling the ongoing conflict in Sudan, firmly asserting that the country’s role is purely diplomatic and humanitarian.
Addressing the press on Monday, Mwaura emphasized that Kenya is not an architect of the war but a neutral mediator working to bring the Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) to the negotiation table.
“Kenya’s involvement is strictly through peace diplomacy, as part of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) peace process initiated and chaired by President William Ruto,” Mwaura stated. “We are working to achieve a ceasefire and lasting peace.”
He highlighted Kenya’s longstanding history in peacebuilding, including its role in facilitating the 2005 Comprehensive Peace Agreement and supporting Sudan’s democratic transition since 2019 through the African Union (AU) and IGAD frameworks.
President Ruto, according to Mwaura, has played a central role in the peace process, chairing the IGAD Quartet and hosting both SAF leader General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and RSF commander General Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo (Hemedti) for high-level dialogue.
In addition to mediation efforts, Kenya has pledged USD 2 million (Ksh. 258.4 million) in humanitarian aid to support those affected by the Sudanese crisis. The country has also offered refuge to those fleeing conflict and has reaffirmed its commitment to providing a safe space for dialogue.
“Kenya stands firmly for peace and dialogue,” Mwaura said. “We urge regional and international cooperation under the AU, IGAD, and the United Nations to support the Sudan peace process.”
The spokesperson cautioned against misinformation, stressing that Kenya’s stance remains unchanged and that any policy shifts will be communicated through official channels.
