The national government has rolled out a Ksh.60 million relief programme to support residents of Tana River County affected by ongoing and recurrent flooding.

The initiative was officially launched on Monday by Special Programmes Principal Secretary Ismail Maalim and his ASALS counterpart Kello Harsama, who toured several affected areas to distribute emergency supplies. Accompanied by Garsen MP Ali Wario, Galole MP Said Buya, and Bura MP Yakub Adow, the officials began their outreach at Bandi IDP Camp in Garsen, where many flood victims are currently sheltering.

Residents received food items, mattresses, and blankets as part of the relief package. Speaking at Majengo, PS Maalim emphasized the government’s commitment to humanitarian support, stating, “It is a constitutional obligation for the government to provide food assistance to its citizens.” He added that over 2 million Kenyans currently benefit from government food aid.

PS Harsama highlighted additional efforts, including the distribution of iron sheets to displaced families across the county, with 600 sheets already allocated to Galole Constituency alone to help with shelter reconstruction.

In addition to providing immediate relief, the officials encouraged residents to leverage ongoing government initiatives such as the Social Health Authority (SHA) for access to affordable healthcare, and the NYOTA programme, which offers economic empowerment and skills training for youth.

The relief effort comes as Tana River continues to grapple with the devastating effects of seasonal floods, which have displaced hundreds and destroyed livelihoods. The government says it will continue to monitor the situation and expand support where necessary.
