Deputy Inspector General Eliud Lagat Records Statement Over Death of Albert Ojwang’

Embattled Deputy Inspector General of Police Eliud Lagat has recorded a statement with the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) as investigations intensify into the death of teacher Albert Ojwang’ while in police custody.

Lagat, who stepped aside earlier this week to allow for what authorities have termed an “uncompromised” investigation, was questioned for several hours on Thursday.

According to IPOA sources speaking on condition of anonymity, the DIG was summoned to shed light on the events leading to Ojwang’s arrest and subsequent death.

Ojwang’, a teacher based in Homa Bay, was arrested after Lagat filed a complaint accusing him of publishing false information.

He was transferred from his rural home to Nairobi’s Central Police Station, where he died just hours after being detained under circumstances that remain unclear.

IPOA has confirmed that more than 20 police officers have since recorded statements, amid mounting public pressure for accountability and justice.

While the details of Lagat’s statement remain undisclosed, his questioning marks a major development in the high-profile investigation.

The case has sparked widespread outrage, with civil society groups and human rights activists demanding full transparency and the prosecution of any officers found culpable.

IPOA continues to lead the probe, seeking to establish the exact circumstances surrounding Ojwang’s death, which many have described as suspicious and deeply troubling.
