Court to Rule on Bail for Businessman Accused of Stealing Over Sh356 Million

Nairobi, Kenya – The court will deliver its ruling on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, on whether to release a businessman accused of theft on bail or bond.

Honey Khatwani, a director at OKI General Trading Limited, is charged with stealing USD 2,786,806.05 (approximately KSh356,711,174.40) from the company.

According to the charge sheet, the alleged theft occurred while Khatwani was serving as a director, with the funds reportedly coming into his possession by virtue of his position.

Khatwani denied the charges when he appeared in court. He was arrested on June 19, 2025, and released on a cash bail of KSh200,000 pending further directions from the court.

During the hearing, the prosecution stated they did not oppose Khatwani’s release on bail or bond but urged the court to impose strict conditions to ensure his attendance in court.

They highlighted that Khatwani still possesses his passport and requested that he be required to deposit all travel documents with the court.

The prosecution also argued that the amount granted for bail should reflect the magnitude of the financial charges.

In response, Khatwani’s legal team informed the court that he is a Kenyan resident, lives in the country with his family, and operates businesses employing over 50 people.

They argued that the seriousness of the offense alone should not be grounds to deny bail.

The prosecution, however, raised concerns that Khatwani could leave the country at will unless the court imposes travel restrictions.

The court will determine the bail application on June 24, 2025. Meanwhile, Khatwani was escorted to Avenue Hospital for medical attention following claims by his lawyer that he was unwell. He was later taken to Capital Hill Police Station.
