Family of Catherine Kafura Still Seeks Justice—One Year After Fatal Juja Accident

The family of Catherine Kafura continues to seek justice for their daughter, who died in a hit-and-run incident on the night of January 27, 2024, near High Point area in Juja, Kiambu County.

Catherine, a fourth-year engineering student at JKUAT in her second semester, was reportedly hit by a vehicle while attempting to cross the road at a zebra crossing.

The vehicle, said to have been driven by the accused, Reuben, allegedly fled the scene after the incident.

During court proceedings held on Monday, June 23, 2025, a key witness named Daniel testified that he had given way to Reuben’s vehicle moments after the accident occurred.

He told the court that he had heard something being hit but wasn’t sure what it was until he reached the spot.

When he approached, bystanders stopped him and warned that someone had just been hit and was lying on the road, urging him to avoid running over the victim. That is when Daniel realized the seriousness of the situation.

He found Catherine critically injured and rushed her to St. John Hospital in Highpoint. “She was bleeding from the nose and ears,” he testified. Sadly, she was pronounced dead upon arrival at the facility.

Daniel went on to explain that he used her phone to try and contact her family. He unlocked the phone using her fingerprint and attempted to call her brother; one of the most recent contacts — but the call went unanswered.

He then tried to call her mother, but the phone had no airtime. A few minutes later, her brother returned the call, and Daniel informed him of the accident and asked them to come to the hospital immediately.

Catherine’s father and brother arrived shortly thereafter and found her body at the hospital. The father then proceeded to Juja Police Station to report the incident and secure assistance to transfer the body to Montezuma Funeral Home.

A post-mortem conducted on January 29, 2024, confirmed that Catherine died from severe brain trauma, consistent with injuries sustained in a road traffic accident.

Catherine’s father, who also testified in court, described his late daughter as the last-born in the family and said she had a promising future ahead.

The case could not proceed fully on Monday as not all witnesses were present. The court scheduled the next hearing for October, as the family continues to pursue justice for their daughter.
