Tension is rising in Kipipiri, Nyandarua County, following the death of 44-year-old Ruigi Ndubi while in custody at Turasha Police Station under circumstances his family and local leaders are calling highly suspicious.
According to a police report obtained by Citizen Digital, Ndubi was arrested on June 23 for allegedly obstructing police officers performing their duties and was reportedly intoxicated at the time. The report states that during a routine cell check at 12:46 p.m., officers found him dead, claiming he had used his shirt to hang himself from a padlock on the inner door of the cell.
However, Ndubi’s family has strongly disputed the suicide narrative, citing inconsistencies in the official explanation. Relatives claim his body was found with his knees touching the ground, casting doubt on the plausibility of a hanging.
“It doesn’t make sense. The place they are describing is barely a foot high,” said Simon Irungu, a family member, in an interview with Inooro TV. “We don’t even know who arrested him. We’re being told he was picked up while heading to a nearby shopping center.”
Local leaders have rallied behind the family’s calls for justice, urging independent bodies to take over the investigation. Githioro Ward MCA Isaac Mbae called on the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) and the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) to launch a thorough probe.
“A middle-aged man was arrested and later found dead on his knees. That does not add up. IPOA and DCI must investigate,” Mbae told reporters.
Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia condemned the incident, linking it to a worrying trend of police brutality. “We appeal to the president to protect Kenyans. The very people entrusted with our safety are now becoming a danger,” Muhia said, also cautioning against any rushed postmortem that lacks transparency.
As public outrage grows, the family continues to demand accountability, vowing not to rest until the truth about Ndubi’s death is revealed.
