CS Murkomen Visits Traders Affected by Protest Violence, Vows Restoration and Support

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen on Thursday morning visited small-scale traders in Nairobi’s central business district whose businesses were damaged or looted during Wednesday’s protests, condemning the violence and promising swift government action.

Accompanied by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, Deputy Inspector General-APS Gilbert Masengeli, and senior security officials, Murkomen toured affected areas to assess the extent of the destruction caused when what began as peaceful Gen Z-led demonstrations turned violent.

“I was taken aback by the unfortunate incidents of violence,” said Murkomen. “What began as constitutionally protected expression was hijacked by organized gangs bent on destruction.”

The CS noted that hundreds of traders and workers had suffered devastating losses, with some losing entire stock and equipment built through years of sacrifice. He emphasized that such lawlessness undermines democracy and causes unwarranted suffering for innocent Kenyans.

“Our hearts go out to the traders and residents whose livelihoods were shattered. We are actively working to restore normalcy, enhance security, and support recovery efforts,” he added.

Murkomen’s visit comes amid public outcry over escalating violence during the June 25 anniversary protests, which left several businesses vandalized across key Nairobi areas, including Ngara, Mfangano Street, Bus Station, OTC, and Koja Stage.

While affirming the right to peaceful assembly, the CS reiterated that the government would not tolerate criminal elements exploiting protests to cause mayhem. He also hinted at targeted support initiatives for affected traders in collaboration with relevant ministries and Nairobi County.

Security operations have since been intensified in the capital to deter further unrest as investigations continue into the coordinated acts of looting and arson.
