Brazil’s new head coach Carlo Ancelotti has called on Neymar to focus on his fitness and get ready for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the veteran forward as a key player for the national team.
Speaking in an interview with the South American football federation on Thursday, Ancelotti emphasized Neymar’s importance despite the star’s absence from his first squad announced in May.
“He must prepare well and he has the time to do that,” said the Italian coach. “He’s a very important player for us regarding the World Cup.”
Neymar, 33, has struggled with persistent injuries throughout his career and has played just 12 matches for Santos in the past five months, scoring three goals. Nevertheless, the Brazilian icon extended his contract with Santos until the end of the year earlier this week, signaling his intent to remain active ahead of the global tournament.
The national team, meanwhile, secured qualification for the 2026 World Cup with a narrow 1-0 victory over Paraguay earlier this month, achieved without Neymar in the squad. Brazil, five-time world champions, will now focus on building a strong side with a mix of youth and experience for the tournament in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
Neymar, Brazil’s all-time top scorer with 79 goals, remains a symbolic and tactical asset. Ancelotti’s remarks suggest the door remains open for the former Paris Saint-Germain star—if he can regain full fitness in time.
