In a separate case, the High Court will today hear a petition filed by the family of Benedict Kabiru, a Kenyan police officer who went missing while deployed in Haiti as part of the government’s peacekeeping mission.
The urgent application, filed by Kabiru’s mother Jacinta Wanjiku Kabiru and uncle Daniel Kabiru Ndung’u, accuses the government of failing to provide credible information or regular updates regarding the officer’s well-being.
The family argues that the silence from state agencies has subjected them to psychological torture and violated their constitutional rights.
They are asking the court to compel the government to disclose Kabiru’s whereabouts or, if deceased, reveal the location of his remains.
The case has reignited public debate over the government’s responsibility for the safety and welfare of Kenyan personnel deployed on foreign missions.
