DPP Approves Terrorism Charges Against 37 Individuals Arraigned at Kahawa Law Courts

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has filed terrorism charges against 37 individuals arraigned at the Kahawa Law Courts in connection with coordinated attacks in Kiambu and Machakos counties on June 25, 2025.

According to a statement from the DPP’s office, 25 suspects were arrested in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, and are accused of committing a terrorist act between 12:00 PM and 11:00 PM on that day. The alleged acts resulted in widespread destruction of government infrastructure, including the Kikuyu Law Courts, Probation Offices, Sub-County Offices, Chief’s Office, and the Dagoretti Police Post, among others.

The suspects face terrorism charges under the Prevention of Terrorism Act, in addition to separate counts of arson and malicious damage to property. Among those charged are Peter Kinyanjui Wanjiru, alias Kawanjiru, and Serah Wanjiku Thiga, who had earlier been the subject of a custodial application.

In Machakos County, 10 individuals were arrested in Matuu and are accused of attacking Matuu Police Station, where they allegedly destroyed police vehicles and assaulted officers on duty.

The prosecution told the court that the charges were based on a comprehensive review of the investigation files and that the suspects were lawfully presented before the court and served with the appropriate charge sheets. Prosecutors emphasized that the charges are legally sound and not politically motivated.

“The charges are not aimed at demonstrators, but at individuals alleged to have engaged in terrorism and deliberate acts of destruction,” the DPP’s statement read.

This clarification came after the suspects, through their legal counsel, filed an application to bar the DPP from pursuing terrorism charges, alleging wrongful arrest and prosecution. The court also heard claims that Peter and Serah had been kidnapped after being granted bail at Ruiru Law Courts,. a claim the DPP dismissed, noting they had not been charged at the time, and only custodial orders had been sought.

Chief Magistrate Gideon Kiaga ordered that all 37 suspects remain in custody until July 10, 2025, when he is expected to deliver a ruling on the application seeking to block the DPP from proceeding with the charges.
