Thirty-six individuals have been charged with terrorism-related offences at the Kahawa Law Courts following coordinated attacks on government buildings in Kikuyu, Kiambu County, and Matuu, Machakos County.

The suspects were arraigned before Magistrate Gideon Kiaga on Thursday, where they faced multiple counts, including terrorism, arson, assault, and malicious damage to property. All accused pleaded not guilty.

The court heard that 24 of the suspects, among them Daniel Wanyoike, Sharon Bosibori, Innocent Shiminana, and Frankline Mwangi, allegedly took part in a terrorist act on 25th June 2025 between 12:00 PM and 11:00 PM in Kikuyu town. The incident reportedly resulted in the destruction of critical government offices including the Kikuyu Law Courts, Probation Office, Chief’s Office, and Dagoretti Police Post.

They were charged with committing a terrorist act, arson, and, alternatively, malicious damage to property. Two others, Peter Kinyanjui Wanjiru alias “Kawanjiru” and Serah Wanjiku Thiga, faced similar charges.

In a parallel case, 10 other suspects arrested in Matuu were also charged with terrorism for allegedly attacking Matuu Police Station on the same day. The attack resulted in the destruction of police vehicles and government property. The accused—among them Nzau Kaloki, Charles Musyoka, and James Lesamana—were also charged with assaulting police officers and three additional counts of malicious damage.

The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) opposed bail, citing the seriousness of the charges, the suspects’ flight risk, and concerns over their coordination across counties. The DPP argued that some of the suspects were not residents of the affected areas, suggesting a premeditated and organised operation targeting state institutions.

The court is expected to rule on the bond application in the coming days as investigations continue.
