16 Arraigned at Kahawa Law Courts Over Terror Attack on Makongeni Police Station

Nairobi, Kenya — The Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has charged sixteen individuals with terrorism-related offences at the Kahawa Law Courts over a violent attack on Makongeni Police Station in Thika West, Kiambu County.

Appearing before Senior Principal Magistrate Richard Koech, the sixteen were charged with Commission of a Terrorist Act, contrary to Section 4(1) of the Prevention of Terrorism Act No. 30 of 2012, for allegedly executing a coordinated assault on June 25, 2025, between 2:00 PM and 7:00 PM.

The accused — Douglas Wambugu Mugeci, Isaack Wandurwa Kagwi, Kelvin Mwangi Nderitu, Michael Waswa Matalanga, Joseph Karanja Mwangi, Paul Kangara Kimandu, Joseph Kamau Njiri, Evans Moki Mutia, Christopher Njoroge Wairimu, Simon Kagunyi, Hassan Kamau Njoroge, Isaac Muraya Muthee, Peter Waruinge Kariuki, Denis Mutei Munyoki, John Mutiso Wambua, and George Kanja Wanjiru — were said to have inflicted extensive destruction on government infrastructure, including setting fire to part of the police station, damaging government offices, torching official vehicles, and injuring officers on duty.

They face five additional counts, including:

  • Malicious damage to property,
  • Arson,
  • Stealing, with an alternative charge of handling stolen property, and
  • Causing grievous harm.

Specifically, the prosecution revealed that the group willfully destroyed eight government vehicles worth Ksh. 2.4 million, and set ablaze a perimeter wall valued at Ksh. 500,000. One of the accused, Isaack Wandurwa Kagwi, was singled out for allegedly causing permanent loss of sight to a police officer during the attack.

All sixteen pleaded not guilty.

The prosecution, led by Principal Prosecution Counsels James Machirah, Kennedy Amwayi, Kamau, and Wangui, strongly opposed bail, citing national security risks, a high likelihood of witness interference, and the potential disruption of ongoing investigations.

“This is a coordinated threat against the peace-loving people of Kenya,” the prosecution argued, adding that the accused could jeopardize efforts to arrest associates still at large.

The case will be mentioned on 17th July 2025 for further directions. The accused remain in custody.
