A 58-year-old man’s joy at becoming a father for the first time ended in court after he was fined for failing to obey police instructions in Juja.
Joseph Irungu was fined KSh 1,000 or face 14 days in jail after pleading guilty to disobeying a lawful order issued by Police Constable Nyongesa in the Rubis area.
Irungu, who was driving a Toyota Hilux at the time, failed to comply with directions given by the officer.
Appearing before the magistrate, Irungu offered a heartfelt explanation: he had just welcomed his first child and, in a moment of joy, consumed two bottles of beer before the incident occurred.
He pleaded for leniency, saying he was overwhelmed by the experience of becoming a father at his age.
“I’ve waited a long time for this blessing,” Irungu told the court.
While acknowledging the emotional significance of the occasion, the magistrate maintained that public safety and respect for law enforcement must prevail.
He urged Irungu to channel his newfound fatherhood into responsible behaviour, noting that future celebrations should take place at home while helping care for the newborn.
The incident serves as a reminder that while personal milestones are worth celebrating, they should not come at the expense of legal compliance and public safety.
Irungu opted to pay the fine immediately and expressed remorse for his actions, vowing to set a better example for his child.
