Naivasha MP Jayne Kihara Charged Over Saba Saba Remarks, Claims Orchestration by State

Naivasha Member of Parliament (MP) Jayne Kihara arraigned at the Milimani Law Courts on July 18, 2025.

Naivasha Member of Parliament Jayne Kihara has been charged with incitement with intent to provoke a breach of peace, following remarks she allegedly made during the Saba Saba protests.

Kihara appeared at the Milimani Law Courts on Friday, where she faced accusations stemming from statements made on July 8, 2025. According to the charge sheet, she claimed President William Ruto was behind the chaos witnessed in Naivasha, alleging that unknown goons were transported in a National Youth Service (NYS) bus and dropped at Karagita, while others were ferried in trucks to Mai Mahiu.

“I know those goons were transported in an NYS bus… Nobody knew them,” she allegedly stated. “As I condole with the bereaved and empathise with those whose properties were destroyed, I want to tell President Ruto, this is not a war you can win unless you want to destroy this country.”

The charge sheet further quotes her alleging collusion between police and the rioters: “Police are not doing anything… we saw the goons walking with them.”

Her lawyer, C.N. Kihara, dismissed the charges as “inconsequential,” calling them typically reserved for “drunk men in the village, not a third-term MP.”

The lawmaker was dramatically arrested at her home in Nakuru County on Thursday, in an incident she livestreamed on Facebook. The arrest followed her failure to honor a summons from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) regarding statements allegedly undermining a senior public official.

Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka was among several political figures who attended Friday’s court session in a show of solidarity.

Kihara’s case underscores growing political tension surrounding the handling of protests and perceived silencing of dissent amid rising civil unrest.
