Police in Kisumu Seize and Destroy Over 200 Litres of Illicit Brew Hidden in Thicket

Police in Kisumu have seized and destroyed more than 200 litres of illicit alcohol following a successful operation prompted by a tip-off from members of the public.

The raid, conducted by officers from the Kisumu Central Police Station, led to the recovery of 10 jerricans of Kangara (each 20 litres), two 200-litre drums of the same substance, and five litres of Chang’aa. The illicit brews were found hidden in dense vegetation, believed to be a temporary storage point ahead of planned distillation.

“One suspect, believed to be the owner of the illicit alcohol, was arrested at the scene. He is expected to be arraigned in court on Monday,” the National Police Service (NPS) said in a statement.

Preliminary investigations indicate the site was being used as a transit point, with the Kangara scheduled for further processing before distribution.

The NPS praised members of the public for their continued vigilance and urged more citizens to come forward with information to help combat the production and distribution of illegal brews.

“Timely information-sharing is crucial in the ongoing crackdown on illicit brews and narcotics,” the police noted.

The operation is part of a wider national effort to curb the spread of unregulated alcoholic substances, which have been linked to health hazards and rising crime rates in several regions.
