Safaricom PLC (NSE: SCOM) has today announced a historic milestone, surpassing 50 million customers on its mobile network in Kenya, a significant achievement as the company nears its 25th anniversary in October.
The telecommunications giant attributes this growth to a yearlong customer engagement campaign launched in 2024, which has included initiatives such as Sambaza Furaha and M-PESA Sokoni, aimed at deepening customer appreciation and enhancing access to digital services nationwide.
“We are honoured by the trust that over 50 million Kenyans have placed in us,” said Safaricom Group CEO Dr. Peter Ndegwa. “This milestone reflects the deep connection we have built with Kenyans over the past two and a half decades, and as we approach our silver jubilee, we recommit ourselves to being a force for good and creating what’s next for our customers.”
Founded in 2000 with just 17,000 subscribers, Safaricom has grown into one of Kenya’s most influential corporations, pioneering transformative technologies like M-PESA, now a robust digital financial ecosystem, and expanding high-speed connectivity through 3G, 4G, and 5G networks.
Beyond Kenya, Safaricom has also made inroads in Ethiopia, where its operations have surpassed 10 million customers as of July 2025, demonstrating the company’s growing regional influence and commitment to becoming Africa’s leading purpose-driven technology firm by 2030.
In the 2024/2025 financial year, Safaricom contributed KES 722 billion to Kenya’s economy, supported over 1.28 million jobs, and positively impacted more than 8 million people through community initiatives under the Safaricom and M-PESA Foundations, focusing on education, healthcare, and economic empowerment.
“Our journey has always been about putting customers first,” added Dr. Ndegwa. “Looking ahead, our next chapter will be about deepening impact, personalising customer experiences, and advancing Kenya’s digital transformation.”
Safaricom’s customer milestone sets the stage for its 25th anniversary celebrations, marking a quarter-century of innovation, impact, and trusted service to Kenyans.
