The Gambia Reaffirms Support for Morocco’s Sovereignty Over Sahara

The Republic of The Gambia has once again reiterated its firm support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara region, endorsing the Kingdom’s Autonomy Initiative as the only credible and realistic solution to the regional dispute.

The renewed stance was articulated in a joint communiqué released after high-level talks held on Wednesday in Rabat between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and his Gambian counterpart, Sering Modou Njie, Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad.

In the statement, Minister Njie reaffirmed The Gambia’s unwavering support for Morocco’s territorial integrity, explicitly recognizing Moroccan sovereignty over the entire territory, including the Sahara region. He hailed the Autonomy Plan as “the only credible, serious, and realistic solution” to the decades-old conflict.

The Gambian Foreign Minister also praised the expanding international consensus behind the Moroccan initiative, a momentum he said is being driven by the leadership of His Majesty King Mohammed VI. He further recalled The Gambia’s historic step in January 2020 as the first country to open a Consulate General in Dakhla, a move symbolizing its early and resolute support.

The reaffirmation by The Gambia comes amid a growing wave of international backing for Morocco’s Sahara policy, strengthening Rabat’s diplomatic position in the ongoing UN-led efforts to reach a lasting political resolution.
