Bomet County NEMA Director Arrested for Alleged Ksh.25,000 Bribe

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has arrested Samuel Kariuki Ngaanga, the Bomet County Director of the National Environment Management Authority (NEMA), for allegedly soliciting and receiving a Ksh.25,000 bribe.

According to the EACC, Ngaanga is accused of demanding the bribe from a lodging facility operator in Mulot in exchange for allowing the business to continue operating without an Effluent Discharge License and an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) certificate, both mandatory under Kenyan environmental law.

The anti-graft agency stated that it received a report of the bribery allegations earlier this week. Following a swift preliminary investigation, EACC officers conducted a sting operation and apprehended the suspect while allegedly receiving the bribe in Bomet town.

“The suspect was escorted to Bomet Police Station for interviewing, processing, and statement recording. He was booked for the offences of soliciting and receiving a bribe and later released on Ksh.30,000 cash bail, pending the outcome of the ongoing inquiry,” the commission said in a statement.

The arrest adds to growing concerns about corruption within regulatory agencies and underscores the EACC’s continued crackdown on public officials who exploit their positions for personal gain. Investigations into the case are ongoing.
