Embakasi East MP Babu Owino has declared his intention to run for the presidency in 2032, boldly stating that he is “already late” in making the ambition public.
The vocal ODM legislator made the revelation shortly after Lang’ata MP Felix Odiwour, alias Jalang’o, hinted during a public function that Babu was positioning himself for the top seat.
“2027 nitakuwa rais. Kukua kwa ballot haina shida. Mimi nitakuwa rais,” Babu said, brushing off questions about his political readiness and timeline.
While the quote suggests a 2027 run, his allies later clarified that the MP is realistically targeting 2032 giving him time to consolidate support and build a national platform.
A former firebrand student leader at the University of Nairobi, Babu Owino, has grown from a controversial youth figure into one of the most active and high-profile legislators under the 2010 Constitution.
His supporters credit him with consistent parliamentary performance, grassroots mobilisation, and unwavering loyalty to ODM party leader Raila Odinga.
His declaration comes at a critical moment for ODM, a party in transition as it grapples with succession planning and generational renewal.
With Raila Odinga’s future uncertain, younger leaders like Babu are beginning to stake their claims as the next face of the movement.
Political analysts view Babu’s announcement as part of a broader trend of youthful leaders signaling readiness to step into national leadership roles.
“He is bold, strategic, and speaks directly to the frustrations of Kenya’s younger voters,” said one Nairobi-based political commentator.
Whether the party will embrace his ambition remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: Babu Owino is no longer playing the long game in silence — his eyes are set on State House, and he wants the country to know.
