Human Rights Activist Mwabili Mwagodi Found Alive After Abduction

Kenyan human rights activist Mwabili Mwagodi has been found alive following a disturbing abduction ordeal that began in Tanzania and ended in a remote part of Kenya’s coast.

According to activist and lawyer Hussein Khalid, Mwagodi was dumped in the bush near Kinondo, Diani, in Kwale County at around 3 a.m. on Sunday and walked for over 3 kilometres before contacting his family.

He was immediately taken to Pandya Hospital in Mombasa for medical attention and is currently under the care of human rights groups VOCAL Africa and MUHURI.

Mwagodi had been missing for four days since his suspected abduction on the night of July 23 in Kigamboni, Dar es Salaam, by armed men in civilian clothes.

In a troubling development, Khalid says Mwagodi voluntarily reported to the Diani Police Station seeking help but was instead threatened with arrest and further traumatized.

“This level of insensitivity by the police is unacceptable,” Khalid posted on X, calling for accountability.

Mwagodi had drawn attention in recent months for his outspoken criticism of politically-linked church fundraising. His disappearance sparked outrage, with his family pleading for answers amid delays and silence from both Kenyan and Tanzanian authorities.

Tanzanian officials reportedly confiscated CCTV footage from the scene of the abduction, complicating efforts to trace him.

Back in Nairobi, Mwagodi’s family expressed deep frustration with investigative delays and a lack of official communication. They have called on both governments to investigate the cross-border abduction and ensure justice is served.

The National Police Service has yet to issue an official statement. Human rights groups are now demanding a full investigation into Mwagodi’s abduction, the alleged involvement of security personnel, and the handling of his case by Kenyan police.

Mwagodi is expected to be flown to Nairobi to reunite with his family after undergoing further medical evaluation.
