Harambee Stars captain Aboud Omar has expressed disappointment over the untimely departure of winger Mohamed Bajaber, who has joined Tanzanian giants Simba SC just days before the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) kicks off.

Omar, who also played alongside Bajaber at Kenya Police FC, said the 22-year-old’s absence will be a major blow to the national team as they prepare to compete in the month-long regional tournament co-hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

“His exit is still painful,” Omar admitted. “He was a key part of our plans, and his presence would have made a big difference in this tournament.”

Bajaber’s move to Simba SC means he is no longer eligible to represent Kenya at CHAN, which is reserved exclusively for players actively competing in their home countries’ domestic leagues.

The tournament is set to begin this weekend, with the Harambee Stars facing mounting pressure to deliver on home soil. Omar noted that while the squad remains determined, losing a top talent like Bajaber at the last minute is a significant setback.

“Losing him just before the tournament begins is a tough one, but we’ll fight on,” the captain said.

CHAN 2024 offers a critical platform for showcasing local talent and fostering regional football development. Kenya, eager to make a deep run, will now have to adjust their tactics and squad dynamics in the absence of one of their brightest young stars.
