Heavy Rains Kill At Least 30 in Guinea Since Late June

Torrential rains and severe flooding have claimed the lives of at least 30 people in Guinea since late June, according to an updated toll released Friday by the National Agency for Emergency and Humanitarian Disaster Management (ANGUCH).

The agency reported that 15 people died on Wednesday night alone, doubling the previous official death toll of 15 recorded since June 28. The latest fatalities bring the total to 30, with at least three others still missing.

“The city of Conakry experienced severe flooding, resulting in loss of life and significant material damage,” ANGUCH said in a statement, noting that the disaster has affected both the capital and surrounding areas.

The agency attributed the surge in casualties to flash floods, house collapses, landslides, and widespread inundation of residential neighborhoods. “Several families were surprised while they slept by the waters,” ANGUCH added.

Rescue and relief operations are ongoing, though access to some affected areas remains difficult due to water damage and debris.

Heavy seasonal rains often lead to fatal flooding in West Africa, where poor drainage infrastructure and unregulated construction compound the risks. Authorities are urging residents in vulnerable zones to take precautions as more rainfall is expected in the coming days.
