Nyali MP Mohammed Ali has opened up about a life-threatening health condition that kept him away from the political scene for the past nine months.
Speaking on Saturday, August 2, Ali disclosed that he had been seriously unwell and had no choice but to step back from public life to focus on recovery.
“I have been very quiet for the last nine months; others think I have run away from politics, and others think I am afraid to pick a side,” said the legislator. “When you are sick, other things can wait; my health comes first. I was very sick; I almost lost my life.”
Ali revealed that between December 2024 and May 2025, he underwent three knee surgeries two performed in Kenya and one in India. He explained that his health condition left him unable to participate in political discussions or make public appearances.
“I underwent three knee surgeries, two in Kenya and one in India. I was not in a position to say what Kenyans wanted to hear from me. I won’t have mixed politics and my health.”
Despite the challenges, Ali expressed hope in his recovery journey and said he has started walking again.
“I have started walking. It will take me another four or six months to fully recover. Hopefully, by December, I will be able to run.”
Ali first sustained the injury in December 2024 during the East African Community (EAC) Inter-Parliamentary Games held in Mombasa. He shared an update at the time, confirming the injury and successful surgery.
“Following the knee injury I sustained during the EAC Inter-Parliamentary Games in Mombasa, I am pleased to share that I have had a successful knee surgery,” he announced.
He also noted that his mobility would be restricted during recovery and announced a temporary pause from politics.
“I am, however, informed by my doctor that my mobility will be limited for at least three months to allow for full recovery,” he said. “I will therefore be suspending all political engagements and activities during this period, but wish to assure all Nyali constituents that office operations will run as usual.”
In his statement at the time, Ali also asked for prayers as he focused on healing. “Please keep me in your prayers as I recuperate, and I hope to bounce back even stronger. Mungu wa kwetu sote.”
Now on the road to recovery, the MP is expected to gradually resume his political responsibilities in the coming months.
