In a historic and symbolic gesture, President William Ruto today opened the doors of State House, Nairobi, to the national leadership of the Boda Boda sector, a move hailed as long-overdue recognition of the industry’s central role in Kenya’s grassroots economy.
Describing the meeting as more than just a formality, President Ruto acknowledged the Boda Boda sector as a critical driver of economic activity, especially among the youth. From ferrying passengers across rural villages to delivering goods in Kenya’s bustling cities, Boda Boda operators have become essential to everyday life and commerce.
“They are not just transporting people. They are transporting the economy, ambition, and resilience,” President Ruto said, underscoring the sector’s contribution to national growth and employment.
The Head of State reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving conditions for the over one million riders across the country. Key promises include the creation of safer and more dignified working environments, easier access to affordable financing and insurance, and comprehensive training programs to enhance professionalism and regulatory compliance.
“This is the Hustler Nation in motion,” the President declared. “It’s not just a slogan, it’s a living promise. And today, that promise rode into State House on two wheels.”
The engagement is seen as a major step toward formalizing and empowering the Boda Boda industry, which has long operated in a regulatory grey area despite its vast economic footprint. The meeting also signals the administration’s broader strategy of inclusivity and bottom-up economic transformation.
President Ruto’s move is expected to set the tone for more structured collaboration between the government and grassroots sectors, particularly in areas that have historically been overlooked in national policy discussions.
