Nairobi Motorists Face Major Road Closures Ahead of Kenya, Zambia Match

Nairobi residents should prepare for significant traffic disruptions on Sunday as police enforce a series of temporary road closures to ease congestion during the ongoing African Nations Championship (CHAN 2024).

The National Police Service (NPS) announced that several key city arteries will be partially or fully shut, with diversions in place to allow thousands of football fans safe passage to the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani.

Among the affected roads is Aerodrome Road, which will remain closed between Madaraka Roundabout and Bunyala Roundabout. One lane of Lang’ata Road, from Madaraka to Lusaka Roundabout, and one lane of Mombasa Road, between Lusaka and Bunyala roundabouts, will also be inaccessible.

Motorists approaching the city centre from Mombasa Road have been advised to divert via Likoni Road through Enterprise Road near General Motors or use the Southern Bypass through Ole Sereni. Those travelling from Lang’ata Road should instead divert through Raila Odinga Road or Muhoho Road via Mbagathi Roundabout.

Thika Superhighway users will face further diversions, with outbound vehicles urged to use Kiambu Road or the Northern Bypass. A roadblock will be mounted at the Ruiru Interchange, while motorists heading from Nairobi to Thika Road are advised to use Kiambu Road at Exit 4 due to another checkpoint at Muthaiga.

Residents of Githurai travelling into Nairobi have been asked to use Githurai 44 through Kiambu Road. Drivers heading to Mwiki from Thika Superhighway should instead use the Ruaka–Baba Ndogo–Lucky Summer–Nairobi River–Mwiki route.

Spectators without vehicle access passes but travelling to Kasarani Stadium must use the service lanes at Exit 7 and Exit 8.

The NPS confirmed that additional officers will be deployed to man diversions and manage traffic flow. Motorists were urged to fully comply with officers’ instructions, with the police warning of stern action against anyone found violating traffic regulations.

“These temporary measures are necessary to ensure smooth traffic management and the safety of fans and residents as Nairobi hosts CHAN 2024,” the NPS said in a statement.
